Kodak Gold 200 Mediumformat

At the beginning of April, MeinFilmLab, together with Kodak Alaris, gave away 200 Kodak Gold 200 films for medium format in a great promotion. While the Gold 200 has been a true classic in 35mm photography for many years, it is relatively new in 120 roll film. I was also fortunate to receive a roll – and after announcing that I would take it on a family trip to Rome, I even got a 5-pack. This gave me the opportunity to thoroughly test the film.

Kodak Gold for Portrait and Street

The camera of choice was a Rolleiflex T. Besides classic street photography, I primarily had a portrait shoot with my cousin at the Trevi Fountain in mind. Additionally, I set myself the challenge of stepping out of my comfort zone and asking more strangers for portraits than I had on previous trips. This refreshing project led to some lovely conversations and acquaintances. The result was a photographic potpourri of random encounters, elegant portrait photography, and an echo of Rome’s timeless aesthetic.

The Kodak Gold 200 handled all scenarios excellently. Its low to medium ASA allows for wide-aperture photography even at midday and in bright sunlight, while also being a reliable option in twilight conditions. The film’s overall warm look and feel perfectly matched the scenario – an Italian metropolis in spring, with Mediterranean influences. The grain is so fine that it shows hardly any quality loss compared to its big brothers, the Portra films.

Many thanks again to MeinFilmLab for the opportunity to capture the trip on this film. A true recommendation for beginners and advanced photographers alike!

We would like to thank Kodak Alaris for the cool promotion and Manoel Eisenbacher. You can find more photos by Manoel on his Instagram account @manoeleis.
